taxIn Nebraska, a couple lives together and had a child in the middle of the year and plan to get married the next year. Still living together the mother has not worked since the baby was born and the father has supported both of them since the birth of the baby. Can the father take the deduction for the baby? Since I suppose they cannot file jointly until they get married. Can he file head of household? |

| You are correct on all counts: the father can take the deduction for the baby and the father can file as head of household. For details, see IRS Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax, which you can download at the IRS site at: http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/forms_pubs/index.html |
