Tax Audit Questions

What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? Texas

Hello.

I am being audited from the tax year of 2002. The IRS is claiming that I had $27,500 in Nonemployee Compensation. Actually, I only have $13,750 in Nonemployee Compensation that I actually owe. The company that I provided work for operated under two names and for some reason they filed me under both companies. I have the W2 from one of the compnaies stating that I earned $13,750 and received nothing from the other company. The company has since gone out of business. I do owe back taxes and am willing to pay them, but I only owe half the amount that the IRS claims. What should I do? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Craig

Tell the auditor just what you told us. They won't kill you, hurt you, or put you in jail.

Take along copies of your bank statements to show that your deposits from both companies total only $13k.

Thanks for the replies thus far! Should I hire an accountant and have them coach me on what to do with the IRS or should I just call them without having an accountant? Thanks for taking the time to answer my basic questions..
