What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? Maryland.

Our church has a short-term mission team to go overseas. Team members need to raise funds for this purposes. We know that donors can contribute to the church for its various works, this being one of them, and claim tax deductions. But can donors designate their contributions to a preferred individual team member and still claim a tax deduction? Some of the church leadership say no; others say yes. Clarifications, please. Thank you.

No, donations are not tax deductible if they are donated to a specific person. They should be given to a "missionary fund" and then distributed to the respective missionaries.
