Tax filing/payment history: how far back?

Suppose you are applying for a job with a federal agency, and that this agency, as part of its background investigation of potential employees, conducts a check of federal tax filing and payment history. Do any tax professionals here know how far back that history will go? Will it go back indefinitely, or only a certain number of years?
