I recently had emergency surgery, for which I was billed an amount in excess of $38,000. I was uninsured and fully responsible for payment. I applied for financial assistance from the hospital and miraculously was given a "charitable discount." Do I need to claim the amount of discount somewhere on my taxes. Would it be considered income?
