Tax money... need help...

What is the name of your state? Florida...

I moved here before I was 18 and I was living with my step-dad... I turned 18 on May 3rd of 2007... so when I filed my taxes this year, my step-dad was like I'm not going to claim you so you can claim yourself and get more money back... could he have claimed me anyway ? I mean, if I was 18 and had a job ? Doesn't that mean that he couldn't have claimed me as a dependant ? And especially since I moved out and I am living with my boyfriend ?

I'm just so frustrated because he is trying to take half of the $471 I got back for my taxes because he didn't claim me... isn't that kind of like tax fraud ? And could I potentially get into trouble with the law over this ? Thanks!

And how did you contribute to your own support when you were living with your step-dad? If you are claiming yourself, then that means that you are paying for more than half of your own support. Did you have a job and then paid rent? Or did someone pay on your behalf?

I paid him rent, it was cheap but it was like $150 a month... also I was paying for half the groceries, if I had to use his truck when my car wouldn't work I had to fill it up even if I wasn't using a whole tank... I had to pay for all my dogs doctor and food expenses... I paid for my own cell phone... I had a car, and I paid for all my own gas and insurance... then he got me a 'graduation present' and it was a truck that has a $420 a month payment that I'm paying as well as insurance... and now I'm stuck with the truck that is killing my financial situation and the truck is in his name and my name is no where on that truck...

Since you only lived with him until May, and you were working and paying him rent, and buying 1/2 of the groceries, then most likely he would not have been able to claim you, as you clearly provided more than 1/2 of your own support for 2007. You absolutely do not have to give him any of your tax refund.

If you don't want the truck, and the truck is not in your name, then give it back to him. Make alternate arrangements for transportation.

Thank you... I guess it's just a decision now that deals with either burning that bridge or not making waves with my step-dad...
