My widowed mother sold her house in December of 2004. She and my father (who died in October 2003) had not needed to file income tax returns for years. I expect that she will not owe taxes on the sale of the house (the only house they ever owned), but does she need to file some kind of form, anyway, to let the IRS know of the transaction?
