Unexpected Tax Refund

I just received a tax refund. The only problem is that I don't know why I received it.
We did not pay enough estimated income tax (according to my calculation) so I sent in a payment voucher and check for the amount due when I filed the forms. I was a few days late in mailing the taxes so I presumed that I would be charged a late fee. I was expecting a notice from the IRS telling me what the late fee and other charges amounted to.

But today, I receive a refund check with no explanation. Just a check. I have not received any notication from the IRS that I would be receiving a check.

In the past, I remember when there was a mistake they always sent a notice telling what was wrong and either a refund or a notice that tax was due.

I am very uncomfortable with this situation. What should I do?
