| | | Virginia Back Taxes What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Virginia
I received a notice from the State of VA last week stating I owed 98, 99 and 01 taxes. They said that they would be garnishing my check effective Nov 17th. I paid taxes for all years in question. I lived in VA but had Maryland taxes withheld from my check and paid non resident taxes to Maryland. VA is saying this was done improperly and I owe them even though I received a tax refund from MD. What can I do at this point? |

| | | Umm, if you are a resident of Virginia, you owe tax to the state of Virginia. Virginia and Maryland have reciprocity on normal income. You are exempt from withholding and do not need to file non-resident taxes in Maryland.
Let me guess, they refunded all your Maryland improper withholding but you never bothered to pay Virginia.
You may be able to work out a payment plan in lieu of garnishment. | |
