I am a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist at a teaching medical facility in PA. Of the 900+ nurses in the union, we are the only advance practice nurses at our hospital who are forced to be members. As professionals with exempt status we have never wanted to be union members but are told we cannot be allowed to leave. Repeatedly we have expressed our desire to get out. Presently, there are only 9 nurse anesthetists which is a very small number. We do not receive fair representation when thrown in with the other RN's of the institution. Our scope of practice and duties and education are much more vast than that of other RN's. Our hours of work, pay, work duties and responsibilities as advance practice nurses in anesthesia, and continuing education are incomparable. The union makes little to no effort to contact us neither do they make any effort to fully understand our roles. Last, it is not standard practice in our area and state to be included in a union. Please tell me if it is possible to leave a labor union(SEIU) and how to do it??
Thank you. What is the name of your state?
