I work for a major utility in Michigan and my position is in the union. We voted for and have been in the union since 1999. In my position, there have always been 2 classification of employees on the same seniority list. When people start in this position they are an Associate and remain an Associate until they are topped out by the supervisor. Once they are topped out, their title changes but their seniority date does not change. It has been like this since we have been in the union and no one had a problem with it until our company went through a major reorganization in 2006. Offices closed and everyone had to fill out a change of headquarters and were placed in offices based on seniority. At that time the union then decided as part of the MOU to separate the 2 classification of employees as far as placement was concerned, which resulted in employees with less seniority being placed in locations that senior employees wanted. This was challenged and they rectified it by making the Associates locations available to senior employees when the Associates topped out. As of present we are all still on the same seniority list. The union is finally figuring out that they need to be on a separate list, but what they want to do is go back for everyone and change their seniority date to the date that they topped out. I have been trying to speak to them and explain that they can't go in the past and change dates, but should go forward with any future employees. Am I right? I don't trust this union and want to get the facts ready. |
