Union Boycott Rules

What is the name of your state? CA
During the Writers Guild Strike late last year and earlier this year,
I wanted to start a boycott of movies & videos, this being the time when studios make the largest portion of their earnings.
The guilds leadership said it was against the law, and I should not mention it again.
After doing some reading I can't figure out how they came to this conclusion.
I see many union sponsored boycotts, but I don't see how they are illegal.
Can you help?
