Employer holding my property against loan

What is the name of your state? Alabama.
I quit my job this week. My employer is holding my tools against a loan I had with the company. The tools are my personal property and were required to do my job, but were not supplied by my employer. There is a large discrepancy on the amount I owe. Until this is settled, my employer will not let me remove my tools from company property. Is this legal? What are my rights?
