I work as a paramedic for a county government, on a 24 hr on shift and 48 hours off shift. There are other paramedics that work a 12 hr schedule 2/2/3 in two other cities still under the county government. We on the 24 hr schedule are paid half time after 40 hrs of work where the 12 hr schedule get paid time and half. We are paid every two weeks and depending on how the workdays line up, you can lose money if you work overtime. Also, when we have mandatory continuing education, we as a whole are in that con ed, the 12 hr paramedics are making time and half, and I'm in the same con ed making about $5.83/hr, which is half time. We on the 24 hr schedule was getting comp time to help balance it out, to take days off and get regular hourly pay, but that was taken away. We have been told that due to our schedule not being set, they are allowed to pay us at half time after 40 hrs. My question is how are the medics on the 12 hour schedule allowed to get time and half and we do not. We are under the same classification according to the county government, and we do the same job and have the same responsibilities.

Do you typically work the whole 24 hours solid? Or are you expected to sleep for part of those 24 hours and sometimes do not have to wake up for a call?

Half time vs Time and Half

Sir or Ma'am,

Yes I work 24 hrs straight. Sometimes, we get to sleep and yes we wake and run the call. We are on 2 week pay period as well, so depending on how the days of work are, paychecks vary in pay cause if you work more over time you actually lose money. Basically, my overtime rate is roughly 5.83/hr.

This is something for your union to address. I suppose you are in the US?

Yes I do work in the US, North Carolina to be precise. As for the union, I work for a county government, therefore there is no union. To be accurate, there is no union for any of the county government employees. To put this into more perspective, if you take gross pay for two weeks $1365.42 and divide it by 80 hours, you get $17.06. Yet, if you divide the 20 hours in overtime $113.78 made, the amount is 5.69. Now, I am far from an accountant or mathematical specialist, but 5.69 is not half of $17.06, its more like 11.38.

Since the last message, I went back through older pat stubs and found that the more overtime I work, the less the rate of pay.
16 hours came to 97.53 which equals to $6.10
20 hours came to 113.78 which equals to $5.69
45.50 hours came to 222.06 which equals to $4.88
So therefore, the more overtime I work, the less I am paid.
