Question

Need benefits

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Oregon
I would like to know if unemployment benefits can be claimed if you quit a job? I have heard that you can quit with cause. What "cause" is there?

It can happen, but it's rare. You need to have "good cause attributable to your employer". Most of the time quitting disqualifes you.

If you can give us an idea of your circumstances, Commentator can tell you what kind of chance you have. That would be much simpler than trying to list all the possible "good causes" there are since they are very, very, very situation specific.

Yup, that's probably true. In general, quitting a job has to be for a "good" reason. In some states, that has to be a JOB RELATED good reason. In some states, if your husband gets transferred to another state, you can quit your job and join him and get to draw benefits if you can't find nother job in the new state.

Because your job is driving you crazy, or you just need to chill, or you've got an opportunity to travel and want to go find yourself...these are generally not good reasons.

Your paycheck was bouncing, your boss threw a stapler at your head, you were asked to dance naked on a table for auditors, or baby sit the boss's pet tarantula...these could very well be good reasons to quit and be approved....tell us the circumstances, we can give you a better idea.

I DO like your imagination!

(Please tell me those suggestions, at least the last two, were out of your imagination and not your experience! )

Thank ya, thank ya very much.... in a long life of dealing with the public, let's see. I HAD the boss who threw the stapler (though not at me!) The girl who was supposed to party with the auditors got approved for benefits, of course.

Babysitting the boss's pet was actually a python the girl was supposed to feed a frozen mouse or rat to each week. She did not get approved, incidentally, because she had actually fed the snake a time or two before she decided it was too much for her and quit. If she'd quit the first time she was even asked, she'd probably have been approved, but accepting the terms of employment, even for a short time, and THEN deciding you can't hack it....too bad. That's why I always preach that you quit before you try out the new job and find out it's too far to drive or doesn't pay enough to live on.
