| Title switch after interview What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? IL
I recently applied for an internal Sr. Director position at the company I’ve been with for 8 years. I’m currently a Director, so I clarified from the very beginning that the position I was interviewing for had a title that was one-level higher (Sr. Director). After I went through a series of phone and in-person interviews, I was told by the recruiter that the hiring department wanted to bring me on and they just needed some time to approve the compensation package. Great, right?... not so fast!
A week later I was informed by the recruiter that they had to lower the positions’ title from Sr. Director to Director. He directly told me that there were two external candidates for this position that had lower salary requirements and were in-line with the Director pay range. He said they still wanted to bring me on if I agreed to a lateral move with only a minimal (3-5%) increase because the comp range is higher for the new group. I know that the Sr. Director title would have brought 10-14%.
All things said, the new position (even with no change in title) brings more room for career growth. So I will most likely accept it. Nevertheless, I feel misled about the opportunity and want to know if this was a common negotiating tactic (BATNA) or if this was illegal practice. Do I have any legal recourse?
