Unpaid training

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? colorado

I just signed on as an "independent contractor" for a speech pathology company. I am going to be paid and hourly rate, and take care of my own medical insurance, business expenses, and pay my own taxes.

The owner of the company is requiring me to spend the first day with her going around and meeting all the clients and training me in all of the procedures. She has stated that she does not have to pay me for this, but will pay me for "2 visits", which is equivalent to 1 hour of work.

My question is: Is it legal for her to require training of me and not pay me my regular salary? Does me being an independent contractor exempt her from paying me?

Wage and hour laws do not apply to independent contractors. She has to pay you whatever your agreement says, no more and no less.
