Working as contract labor

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Texas
I am a physician who just quit at the multiphysician, multispecialty clinic I have been at since 1995. The Clinic has had a "monetary shortfall" for 2 months running and I haven't gotten anything for working the whole month in my office. What made me leave, however, was the fact that they took money out of my check for time I worked nights and weekends in the urgent care clinic associated with the Clinic. It was my understanding that this was just an hourly, contract labor type situation that had nothing to do with the rest of the Clinic per se. I thought I was just an hourly contractor. It is very upsetting that I worked extra, outside of my regular office time and away from my family to try and make ends meet, and they took $233 out of my Clinic Care money in November and now $4700 out of my Clinic Care money in December. Had I known they were going to do this, I certainly would not have continued to show up to work at Cinic Care that is not required. I am considering filing a small claims suit against the Cinic for my $4900 of Clinic Care money. Do I have a reasonable case? Do I need a lawyer to file this for such a small amount in terms of lawsuits?

1. You don't need a lawyer for small claims court.

2. You should never ever post your email address on a public forum like this one.
