What is the name of your state? Virginia

My wife and brother-n-law had a written contract that my wife was to pay her brother $6200 at end of last year out of the family estate. My wife ask to forgo from paying him at the agreed time to pay some medical bills. Her brother agreed for her to hold the money and then pay him back later alittle by little.

Question: Does now the verbial contract superseed the written one?

Question: With monthly payments now being made to her brother (at which he has already cashed) her brother now can not come back and say he wants all of his money in full now...correct?

Any advice please....
