Do we owe?

My brother in law passed away in August in New Mexico (we live in Michigan). He had a very small estate (under $2,000.00 in bank & paying on a trailer). His step son(never adopted) lived in his trailer up until December when he was finally forced to move out by the person that took the trailer back. My husband being the only living relative is closing Gerrys bank account. There's no insurance or any other inheritance. His step son lived in Gerry's trailer(without our permission) all that time, bills were paid out of Gerry's account because it took until December for his Death Certificate to be issued so we couldn't stop the billings before that! There was over $900.00 in just phone bills. Since Gerry died in August, the mobile home park is saying that his estate owes for 4 months of lot rent(almost 1400.00). His step son should pay it since he lived there (and when he left he took everything with him!)...the money that is left in Gerrys account will not cover what they are saying he owes. Why would the estate owe something after his death? And we're not getting the trailer, the guy that was selling it to him is taking it back. We have no way of taking care of this stuff so we told him to just take it & sell it. Shouldn't that come out of the sale of the trailer? And are we liable? We have never signed for anything, and by the time we pay his electric bill, other phone bills his step son made, etc there won't be any left. Sorry this is so long but it's really confusing to us and we don't see how they can make us pay this..
