If a home is left to an adult child through a will is the remainder of the mortgage to be paid by the estate, or does the person inheriting the home also inherit the debt?

You don't inherit debt. The estate is responsible for paying all debts, including mortgages, before distributing remaining assets to the heirs. If the house has to be sold to satisfy the mortgage and/or other debts, you don't get the house.
