What is the name of your state? Virginia
I don't own a home. I have a car and some checking and savings accounts (joint with my wife). How do I make sure that the money in these accounts go to another person we specify in case of our death.
1) Can I write a will by myself? What is the process? Any particular format?
2) Should an attorney be involved?
3) Where should I keep the will? Can I have sealed copies of it kept with different people?

It is strongly suggested that you have an experience probate attorney draw your will, or at least use a 'will kit' that is designed specifically for your state. The problem is that each state has different probate laws and there are issues of estate planning, tax considerations, etc. that could affect the validity of your will.
