California.

Man dies unexpectedly without a will. His brother is located and is willing to serve as executor. The estate is under $10K, but does involve a couple of older (junk) cars and a boat.

1. What does the brother need to do to get the process rolling?
2. Is a bond required?
3. Is an accounting required? If so, to whom?

Thank you for your help.

If the estate is less that $10k, there is a VERY simplified process in CA. Go to the Superior Court in the county of his residence and speak with the clerk of the probate part.
