When there is no will, property titled in a decedent's sole name passes according to the state's intestacy laws. Unmarried, unrelated persons never inherit under intestacy laws. In Illinois when there is no spouse, next in line are children and descendants of deceased children. If your partner wants you to receive anything, he needs to write a will including you as a beneficiary or add your name to the title as a joint tenant with rights of survivorship.
