My Mother and Stepfather have been married for 20 years or more. He is seriously ill and has not provided for her in any way. Their house is deeply mortgaged, they have no savings, insurance and very few assets. If he lives, but lingers a long time, she has no way to pay his hospital bills or support herself and pay the mortgage. They are married, but she is not listed in his will to get anything. If he dies, she loses everything. Is this the case? Is there anything she can do to make sure she survives HIS illness and possible death? Would filing bankruptcy after his death help her at all? I would like to know if she has any hope of keeping her home or any of the things she has worked hard for her whole life. She lives in New Hampshire.
