new jersey-i was wondering how long the probate time limit is before the will is settled.example nc is 90 days so how long is nj thanks

DEAR CMORSE:

There really is no easy answer to your question. A lot depends on how simple or how complicated the person's estate financial matters are--simple would be bank accounts, home, etc. More complicated would be stocks, bonds, more than one home, etc. transactions that may take more time if they have to be sold or lots of paperwork done to get resolved.

Ask the executor or the attorneys or the judge what there reasonable expectation is of when the estate will be closing. It could be anywhere from 6 months to a year or longer.
