What is the name of your state? How long does it take to be notified after someones death if you are in their will? Do they send you a letter by mail, or do they contact you usually by phone? My state is Mo. The deceased lived in California.

Who is the 'they' you keep referring to? No one may notifiy you even if you are in the will. Or they may. It depends on if the will has been through probate, if there is an executor named or if the will is being administered by a crooked politician who needs the money for his reelection.

Do you even know if the "They" is dead?

If the deceased provided the executor with your name and address, the executor would probably have contacted you by now. Most likely the decedent did not know your address and probably mentioned you in the will by name only.

Therefore, if you know the city where the decedent died, then contact the county courthouse probate court for that city to see if the will has been filed. If it has been, you can order a copy of the will and can also get the name and address of the estate executor. You would then write or call the executor to find out the status of the probate case. Executor may not be able to give you an exact figure of how much you will be receiving, since taxes and other estate debts must be deducted before the estate is divided amongst the heirs, but should be able to give you a guesstimate of how long probate will take.

You should expect a time period of about 2-4 months for the estate to be probated before you will receive your check.
