We are in Pennsylvania. My father-in-law is very ill and in the hospital. He is near comatose and may very well need to go to a nursing home. There are some mutual funds, two of which he is co-owners with my husband for about $10,000 each. If he should go to a nursing home, would we have to give this money to the nursing home. How do we go about getting power of attorney to pay his bills?

DEAR BF:

It's a shame about your father-in-law's illness. Does he have a will prepared?

Any attorney can tell you how to get a power of attorney form. Actually, you may be able to get a blank form from any office supply store in the legal forms section. You may want to consider hiring an attorney to advise you how to best be in the position to handle your father-in-law's
financial affairs.

Do not tell the nursing home about the CD's as that is private family business. Of course, you can use that money to pay off the bills.

SINCERELY,
