I recently got married to a great gal whose father has been very ill for quite some time and most likely will die within the next year. In the time he has been sick, he has accumulated substantial medical bills. The estate of he and his wife, stepmother to my wife, is very small.

When he dies his wife will then assume financial responsibility. When she dies, what happes to any outstanding financial burden that may remain?

In general, how is financial burden disbursed when a family member dies?

My wife and I live in CA and my wife's father lives in WI.
