My father-in law has a will in which his deceased (1 year) wife was executor and his former lawyer (also deceased) was coningent executor. He has two daughters. What is the probate impact of not having a living executor? All involved live and have lived in Connecticut.

You did not state whether your FIL is still alive. If he is and is still of sound mind, he needs to draft a codicil nominating another executor and alternate executor. Otherwise, one of his daughters can file to be the executor of his estate upon his death.
