Charging employees for being late?I live in Caifornia and am a dispatcher for a small security and patrol company. Recently a guard at our company notified me that our employer has begun to "charge" the secuity guards $5 for every hour that they are late. This can't be legal. What can I do? Also, I've never received a legitimate pay stub, only a printed out sheet of paper with deductions. Is THIS legal as well? |

| In California, an employer MAY make deductions for losses or shortages under certain conditions. However, I doubt that the fines you describe fall under the approved situations. CHeck with the California Wage and Hour division. I'm not aware of any state that requires an actual pay stub. Even in the states which require itemized statements, a separate listing showing deductions is legal. Furthermore, unless my list is out of date (which I admit is possible) California does not even require that. So I suspect they're okay on that. |
