What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Texas
Are employers in texas required to hold job position for injured worker's? What if the employee is released on light duty but does not report for light duty? Can this be considered job abandonment?

Yes, this is an on the job injury that he was off work for. He was released on light duty but did not report to work till a month later. His position was no longer available but he has filed unemployment now.

I doubt he will be eligible for unemployment but one should always file.

if there was work available for him within his restrictions, he had an obligation to return to work. His failure to return to work without cause is simply him quitting. You generally do not get unemployment when you quit a job without cause.
