Hello my name is Lance Herner i am 23 years old and i live in Trenton NJ. My mother was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer about 2 months ago and she underwent emergency srugery about a month ago. She seems to be doing well and she is just starting Chemo therapy. My Mom lives in Wayne, NJ with her boyfriend and as of recently he has to work all the time. Is this sufficient enough for me to get out on FMLA and to get PAID on disability or something?? Ive been helping out as much as i can and try to be there for her on the weekends but i feel as if she needs more help and she is feeling sick. And I just wont be able to take the time off if im not going to be able to pay my bills.. What are my options?? How can i care for my mom and get paid?

While you may well qualify for FMLA or NJ's state equivalent if you meet all the criteria, you are not guaranteed paid leave, only unpaid. You may request to substitute vacation, sick or other paid leave as part of the time off, but neither the Federal nor the state version promises you paid time off.

NJ does have state paid disability coverage but I think it only pays if YOU are disabled, not for caretakers.

How do you all feel about nursing home or visiting nurse care? Being imminently terminal is not always necessary to qualify. Also, maybe respite care if you and your siblings are taking on the nitty gritty stuff?

It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's a valid resource you might want to consider.
