Can a CC company be "forced" by a user to go to collection on a closed account over h

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?California.
I closed a CC account because the company refused to charge back an unauthorized charge. That is the only charge in the balance on the account. I advised them that I would only pay the amount if ordered to do so by a court. I further requested that they send it to collection now so the issue could be resolved. I got a reply back that fees and interest would be added until the balance was paid, with no suggestion as to how long that might continue. Is there anything that I can do other than pay and then sue them - which would be a waste of resources. What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?
