Long story short. I want my son to have my last name. He currently has his mother's. I am the bio father. I do pay child support. The mother and I were never married. My son is 1 year old. I currently have joint custody of him (temporary orders). Is it possible? is it hard? how will the process work?

thanks in advance

It is possible, but you have to go through the courts. How hard it is, depends on if the mother is in agreement or not. If she isn't, youll have to fight it in court. My son has my last name, his dad wanted him to have his, so we went to court; they ended up granting us both names with a hyphen, but it never went through because he never finished paying the lawyer to file it. The judge will want to know your reasons for wanting to change it, etc.

Petition to hyphenate his last name rather than changing it. Its a compromise that judges are quite fond of.
