Is is possible to buy the rights to an expired (cancelled) trademark?

Yes. Just because a trademark is expired or cancelled in the USPTO does NOT mean that the trademark owner doesn't still have rights to the name or logo -- it just means that the owner doesn't have the advantages of a registered trademark.

However, if the mark is truely abandoned, and is not currently in use, it may be possible to begin using the mark yourself without ha ving to buy anything from anyone -- but you'll want to have an attorney do a trademark search before you take that road.
