What is the name of your state? Michigan

I was wondering if it is possible for me to legally seperate from my husband so that I can receive aide to return to college?

He is the sole income of our family. We have 3 children together and we also have custody of his son from a previous relationship. And I still cannot qualify for any financial aide. Believe me, we are not wealthy, either... which is why I want to return to school after being a stay at home mom for the last 5 years.

I feel lost. I want to help my family but I can't afford it.

You can, but it would be FRAUD.

I am sorry.
I am trying everything I can to help support my family and I think that it's terrible that those of us who work hard can't get any support to go back to school. But if you don't work then you go for free.

I'm not saying I want a free ride. I want *help* to pay for it.
Not only that... but I didn't do it! I'm ASKING. I don't know the rules! I've never recieved any type of government assistance! I just don't understand why my husbands income should soley affect my college education! I do work part time to pay for my bills.... but it's only on the weekends......

I didn't mean to start drama. I just had a question.
Thanks a lot.

Shall I go on??

And yes, of course your spouse's income counts -- it's HOUSEHOLD income. If you worked full time, it'd be household income, too.

If you can't/won't work full time now, why bother to go to school to get a degree/certificate to hang on the wall? Are you suddenly going to blossom into a full time worker bee once you have a piece of paper?

I am sorry.

OK... if you're going to spit on me for asking that question, are you going to throw stones for me asking this???

But honestly, what is the difference between a legal seperation and a divorce, then? I guess I don't understand. :(

I thought if I moved into the district to attend college it would be at a cheaper rate. If I have to live apart from him that would be a seperation, right? What's the difference? I can't move my whole family.

Hopefully you will insist that your daughters/sons make sure they and their future spouses place completing their education BEFORE marriage and kids. It is absolutely essential that women understand it is no less important for them to have a sustainable career than it is for any man - before they begin and continue making babies.

Then you need to look into student LOANS and scholarships.

If you can't go to college until you receive assistance and you can't receive assistance while you are still with your husband, any "legal separation" for the purpose of receiving assistance would be a fraud.

Right now I work on the weekends and I am already taking prerequisite classes during the week. But once I enter into the program I am trying to get into I will have to attend full time. So I don't know who you think you are.... but I take care of 4 kids, work 20 hours a week on the weekends and go to class during the week. I'm talking about making sacrifices here so that my family will benefit in the long run.

What the hell is this forum for if I can't ask questions?

Feel free to ask questions. I'll feel free to answer.

No one is interested in your sad little life story. The legal question you asked on this legal site was if you could fraudulently separate from your husband in order to get a free ride at college. Correct? And the legal answer given was no, that would be fraud.

What more do you want? Shall I go stand in the corner and softly play the violin while you blather? Perhaps you'd like an omelette?

Thank you. That is what I was looking for.

I'm still looking into scholarships. The loans I have been accepted for won't totally cover the costs of my schooling when I go full time but I guess I will look into that further.

Thank you very much.

The point is..... you didn't ANSWER any of my questions. You were just outright RUDE. Then of course I felt like I had to defend myself otherwise I wouldn't have gone on with my "sad little life story".

I don't want ANYTHING more from you. You're just outright RUDE.

That's okay. You think I'm rude on a MB; I think you're dishonorable IRL.
