and have got through it. Just curious what your biggest expenses where?

I had a trial for a accident i had over a year and was convicted last week. Phoned insurance company and they dropped my policy. They said when i get my license back i should expect to pay triple of what i am now (or was) for three years. So about 6 grand a year im expecting.

Just a list of what i have paid out so far. $5000 lawyer, $460 car impoundment, $1000 court fine, $503 back on track program, expecting to pay around $1300 for interlock device, damages to vehicle were around $350. I think reinstatement of license is $150.

So without future insurance added the above list comes out to about $8803.

The worst part about all this is finding rides to and from work/probation.

Anybody else totalled the cost of what there dui has cost them?

If i didnt make such bad decisions i could have bought a nice car.

By the way im In Canada and i know this forum is suggested for American Law so cost may be different.

But the question im asking is how much financial strain your dui's have cost you?

Thanks

Mine cost around 4 grand all together. The biggest price tag was the lawyer.

It's the experience that changes you though, the financial cost being only part of that. Finding rides was challenging. I often recommend that people call their old "drinking buddies" and share the burden a little, and also let them know how screwed up life becomes when you choose to drink and drive. It's also easier to get help from others if you stop trying to keep your DUI a secret. It's embarassing, I know.

Of those I asked in my talks, when asked how many times someone has driven drunk, the answer is usually "only once or twice", or something like that. When I ask "how many times have you driven after drinking, yet your weren't 'drunk'?", the answers go anywhere from "hundreds", to "more than I can remember".

Really, it's just a matter of time until they are caught. Then they get the picture. A limo for the evening would be cheaper than driving after drinking.

Lets start to tally it up...

You wanted to know how much a DUI costs? Well, Since my son just got his first one in California at age 22, lets start from the beginning and I can add the numbers as he goes through the system.
So far:
$50.00 - to get a release form from PD to show to storage company to get car out.
$240.00 - to tow company to get car released.
At this time he cannot afford a lawyer so he is just going to show up for his court date and see what happens. Court date scheduled for Oct.9th. so I'll keep you posted...

Your son might qualify for a public defender. He'll have to complete a financial affadavit proving that he cannot afford to hire an attorney based upon his legal income. It's not the greatest way to defend oneself, but better than going it alone. He's in another galaxy now as to the court system. He's the alien, and will need help.

MY cost for DWI

Recently got DWI (BAC 0.1). I went to court. I was charged DWAI luckiley with following penalities.

Court fine -580
licence suspension - 90 days
No classes needed.

Can anyone let me know, if DWAI shows my criminal record or I dont need to worry about this?.

Costs:

Paid:
Attroney charge - 1750.00
car taken from tow office - 230.00
For taxi (from and to tow office ) - 70.00
Alchocol evaluation - 230.00
Victim impact panel - 25.00
for going to victim impaoct pannel taxi - 25.00
Victim impact pannel fee - 25.00
For going and coming court taxi - 45.00
Court fine - 580

Yet to pay:
Drivers responsibilyt program to DMV - 750 (250 each year)
Inusrance raise - No idea ( anyone please suggest how much it is going to increase)
licence reactive fee ( no idea) - minimum it will come 200$. It is so?

So I estimated ir will come aroung total 4000$.

could you give a brief info about your story like BAC level and final outcome etc etc

i can try to replay the night.....went out with friends and got drunk, my buddy moved into the area so he asked if i wanted to check out his crib. i said, why not probably end up drinking some more and eat some food. we take the 'scenic route' to get to his place, a cop is trailing him, so he switches lanes. the cop is now behind me, i get pulled over and my buddy keeps on driving. needless to say he was drunk driving that night, but didn't get caught (and he wants to be a state cop)

i mean now when i go to a bar or club and i have to drive to get there, i'm dd. what amazes me when you look around in the bar (at least some of the places i go), i can guarantee 85% of the people in there drove and are drinking. i tell everyone who continues to drink and drive that you're gonna get caught sooner or later and almost hope that they do. hardest part is convincing others not to do it. i've had people say to me, "why should i stop, i haven't been caught yet."

my BAC was .11...i just got my expungement in the mail yesterday. so now i'm just working and looking for jobs so i can get a start to my career.

Does the court appoint a public defender and when? My son has no clue as to what he is supposed to be doing or how to prepare for this?
Another question: In California after getting a DUI you have 10 days to call the DMV and request a hearing to preserve your driving rights. My son has a hearing by phone scheduled in Oct. This matter is in addition to the DUI charges. Anyone have any ideas on the questions? Or the answers?

bigmistake- i agree.. im not secret about mine at all.. iv pretty much been living it every day since its happened (atleast thinking about it once a day)

Looking back i wish i didnt try to "fight" it.. if i went through with guilty i would have been back on the road now!

dont drink anymore (actually not allowed to under court order) have no friends, no transportation and my job is hanging on by a thread. Tough lesson learned and it's vicious cycle still isnt over with!

my family actually wanted me to go further and appeal my trial which would have cost me another 14000.. yep 14 grand.. not to mention the previous 8 grand i mentioned in my first post. Im 22 not rich nor do i want to drag this disaster out any longer.

it's interesting to see what other have paid out for dui. Man i sure i wish i had that 8 grand sitting in my bank lol

live and learn :)

newdui- im sure the insurance thing is different for Canada and the USA. My insurance company told me when im about to get my license back to find someone who insures high risk drivers here in Ontario (i believe its called SR-22 insurance to you Americans)

she told me i should expect to pay around triple of what im paying now.. so about 500 a month.

with all this i should be able to move away from home when im 50......

Continuing the cost of DUI for son. Above it began with the charge to get car out of storage $300.00. I have now decided to get him a lawyer add $900.00. I'll keep posting as the cost continues, as I know this is just the beginning. Stay tuned...

Yeah, my lawyer was $1500, plus fines which were $350. I had a 2nd offense DWI which also landed me 8 days in county jail (could have been 6 months). I got a little lucky b/c I used to date my attorney, but I have heard from most people, that something like this is in the ballpark of $10,000. Also, because I still had a lien on my vehicle (even though I couldn't drive at all) my insurance was $4000/yr...that's without collision. Had to sell the car. For what I was paying in car payments and insurance, I could have been driving a brand new
Mercedes Compressor, or something in the likes, if I hadn't made such poor decisions. I won't be driving for 3 more years either.
