I would not recommend that you serve the papers yourself. First, there's the risk of a violent response. Second, if he says that you never served the papers, it's your word against his.

It's not expensive to have the papers properly served.

She cannot serve the papers. Parties cannot serve -- it would not be proper service. To find out how to properly serve she needs to read the local rules and rules of civil procedure.
