What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Indiana

I have a pretrial conference set for November 20th. I currently have a public defender. At the time of arraignment I could not afford a lawyer. Now, I am able to and have a job and would much like to hire someone else.

Is that a possibility at this point? Do I just go about it by calling the new attorney I am wanting to hire? I assume a continuance is a possibility but I do not really know for sure...

Um, the first thread is from an incident that happened 3 years ago.

The other thread was asking about the police video. This thread asks if I can hire an attorney. Each are relevant to their own post and section.

Is it possible to still hire an attorney or is it too late?

Rather urgent if you don't mind. I don't want to feel like an idiot calling an attorney Wednesday when I get a break....

Of course you can hire an attorney. In fact, as long as your funding doesn't run out, you can put an army of lawyers on retainer and have them handle your e-mail and take phone messages.

Discuss this with your public defender--he will probably be glad that you are going to be using someone else.
