Truancy Ticket

My daughter was given a truancy ticket; however, she had permission from her ROP teacher, (She volunteers at a hospital during 1st and 2nd period) to miss those two periods so she will be able to attend an assembly during 2nd(At her school) . She missed her bus; therefore missing part of the assembly and while she was about to walk into school a police officer told her to meet him in his office. My question is: 1) How much do truancy tickets cost? 2) Money is difficult right now so is there any alternatives such as community service and how much will range? 3) If she had permission from her teacher not to attend the periods she missed, is the ticket still valid especially since it was given in school grounds?

Thank you for your help trying to understand the truancy law.

When asking the principal the questions, she was clueless in the matters and the officer was also stubborn will not answer my questions either and said, "Take it to court."

Truancy laws vary by state, they are not nationalized. hence the reason you are asked for the name of the state the event occurred in.

That depends ... what state is this, and what code section was cited? If not a state code, what local jurisdiction was this in?

And what was the statute cited on the ticket? In Los Angeles there could be municipal codes that might apply as well as the state Education Code.

In general, as the officer said, she will have to make the case before a court or a juvenile probation officer if the matter is referred to court. Very often, these matters are handled in-house if a first offense. She could receive Saturday school or some similar punishment for the offense.

The story she told here is a little suspicious. Permission to miss a class does not necessarily equate to leaving or remaining off campus. If this is a legitimate excuse, she will have the opportunity to make her case to either the appropriate school personnel or a court.
