I’m in South Dakota, my daughter is 18 and graduated June 3rd, I also have a 13 year old boy. My question is:
Let’s say I’m paying 700/month for both children, since my daughter is 18 and has graduated does my child support automatically change to half, in this case $350, to pay for my son? When do they stop taking the $ out of my check for my daughter?

There’s tons of info out there for people not getting child support, but none out there for us who have done their job and have completed their obligation of support for the 1st of 2 children.
Please help.

You need to file and let CSEA know that your daughter is 18 and graduated. Also, be prepared that your child support will NOT necessarily be cut in half. That is not the way it works. Has your income increased since the order was set? Has mom's income changed? Costs for health insurance gone up? Day care considered and no longer necessary?

It's not automatic. You'll have to go to court and get it changed due to change in circumstances.

Here's a couple of resources:

http://dss.sd.gov/childsupport/modifysupportorder.aspx

https://dss.sd.gov/formsandpubs/docs/CS/SE415.pdf

Looks like there are forms and instructions so you shouldn't need a lawyer.

Jump on it.

I do not disagree with this advice but its incomplete.

Child support does not divide in half when one of two children ages out. It is recalculated. If your income has increased at all since child support was originally set I strongly recommend that you google for an online child support calculator for your state and run some numbers before you file for a modification. Sometimes a modification ends up with child support increasing rather than deceasing when its recalculated.

That was already stated.

Lots of posts end up redundant for any number of reasons. All this bickering does is hijack OP's thread.

Thanks, they make it such a pain for the Dad, the Mom is fine with it being cut in half but she can be greedy too. It just sucks, wouldn’t want to be fair to a Dad that’s been paying especially since South Dakota is the number one state for Dads not paying. Ridiculous.
