I recently (9/4/18) purchased a vehicle from a private party. Vehicle was claimed to be in great shape, and was sold under
warranty with 37,000 miles.
It developed a problem and on taking it to the dealer the warranty was
denied because massive damages were found under the plastic fascia and the
VIN was flagged as "junked" (not salvage), as of 7/2017 . Warranty rejected,
still sitting there in pieces as of today.
Ran vehicle history on the VIN after being referred where by local DMV Investigations department.
Found the vehicle was declared "junked":
Applied By: MISSOURI Applied On: 06/26/2017 Brand Explanation: The vehicle is incapable of safe operation for use on the roads or highways and has no resale value except as a source of parts or scrap, or the vehicle's owner has irreversibly designated the vehicle as a source of parts or scrap. This vehicle shall never be titled or registered. Also known as nonrepairable, scrapped, or destroyed.
Somehow, this was issued a CLEAN, not salvage or built CA title, which I hold in my
hand, as of 2/2018.
Current Title Information
California 02/06/2018 000030868 Miles
Historical Title Information
California 01/26/2016 000000010 Miles
Missouri 06/26/2017 UNKNOWN
Supposedly the chain of custody was the vehicle was purchased at auction,
then resold to the seller I purchased it from, the person who purchased from
the auction house is a personal friend of the seller.
I contacted my insurance provider to find out how this slipped through
the cracks when I purchased insurance and they informed me they do not run
VIN history until the first policy renewal period.
I have contacted the DMV fraud department in to find out how the
title was issued.
I reached out to the seller as soon as I found all this out (yesterday) but
have received no response as of yet.
Who is at fault here? DMV for issuing title? Seller? The friend who bought it at auction?
Trying to leave out the sob story here but me and my family are really dying here.
