If the one who is having wages garnished objects to the garnishment for any reason, including bankruptcy, the employee must file an "Objection to Garnishment" form with the court.

Jules663 didn't mention the reason for the garnishment but if it is for taxes or child support, bankruptcy isn't going to help him.

I suppose it could, but at least where I live chapter 13 payments don't start out garnished.

And where I live they show up on page 3 of the newspaper every couple of weeks.

Chapter 13 bankruptcies are payment plans. The one who filed will not have wages garnished if s/he sticks to the payment plan. In Michigan, bankruptcies and foreclosures and divorces, etc., are published in the legal news.
