So Andy shows Jim a little video of a concept he has for a dating app. It has a unique feature, let's say it's the first to introduce swiping right to match.

Jim then has a bunch of other ideas to make this app even better, and knows Andy isn't a business guy anyway, so he starts his dating app, including the swipe right feature, himself.

Could Andy successfully sue Jim for "stealing his idea."

Andy could sue. The question is whether he'd win. To the extent that Jim used the same look of the feature or used the same code he might be able to win. But he'd not win just for using the concept of swiping to the right unless Andy had obtained a patent for that. This all assumes that this is taking place in the U.S. You did not identify the state as asked for when you posted, so I don't know where you are. If it's not in the U.S. you'll need to look elsewhere for your answer. These boards only cover the U.S.

Absent any agreement between Andy and Jim to the contrary, as soon as Andy disclosed his idea to Jim, Jim was free to develop this idea.

The way to protect an idea is to keep the idea a secret.
