Telephone Harassment by a Business

For over a year I have received calls from a rental company looking for someone that is not me, I have repeatedly told them I do not know this person and please take me off their call list, they say they will and then continue to call me looking for this "irene" person. Can I sue their company for harassment?

No...well, you could, but you won't win.
You should write a letter (pen to paper) and send it to their corporate office explaining the problem. You should also block their number, although that won't help if they call from different numbers.

OK so I won't win, but would it cause enough commoption to get them to stop calling? Would they offer me a settlement to avoid the hassle and then lose my number?

I checked all three of my numbers and they have been on the DNC list since 2019. This is a collections call looking for a woman who is not me , I dont know her, have never heard of her. I have told them nicely to stop calling but now they are calling multiple times per week again.

I left a voicemail for their CEO today because i was able to track him down online.

I was going to suggest the Do Not Call list (https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0108-national-do-not-call-registry) but you apparently have included the collector's number. You can also block the number on your phone but I know robocallers use several different numbers.

Sadly, letter writing is a dying art.

Just received a callback from their company President. He said he would handle it himself and I'm sure the little local branch will get the point when he calls them and their regional manager to remove my number from their lists. I informed him that if I get one more call I am seeking counsel to purge my phone records and match up the number of calls over the last year and a half and handle it from there. Thanks for the answers.

Sounds promising.

Companies can be fined by the FTC over $40,000 per call so I am sure the rental agency/collector wants to avoid that.
