What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

I'm living in CA and have just applied to remove the conditions of my green card which expires on the 20th of December 2008.

Will I be able to travel out of the US while my application is being processed? Do I have to apply for a travel permit to re-enter the US in Jan 09 when my green card has already expired?

Yes, if you have already received your receipt notice, which gives you an automatic 1 year extension and you plan to return to the US after your green card expires, then you can go to the local USCIS office and obtain a stamp in your passport.
