If an employer senses forgery or fraud of a doctor's note for an employee to return to work, can the employer verify the information with the physicians office? Not looking to obtain reason for visit or any personal or medical information, just simply wish to verify that the employee was seen.

They can try. But the doctor's office really shouldn't even confirm whether the employee is a patient there without permission from the employee. If you think the note is fake, you can try calling and asking if the note was written by the doctor; fax them a copy and ask them to verify.
