What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Arizona
I mistakenly put the wrong apartment number on my move out paperwork, and as a result my security deposit was sent to the wrong apartment. The person in that apartment said that they returned the check, but my former rental company said that they have not received it. So far it has been about nine days since they (supposedly) sent the check back. What is my next move here?

You can either wait or you might ask your former landlord to put a stop payment on the first check (and you pay the associated fee) and cut you a new check.
