Hi everyone, I just need help on what steps to take since I bought a motorcycle with no title.
I know I shouldn't have bought it without a title, but it's been done.
Anyways, I bought a 1980 Yamaha XS750 recently and the seller did not have a title. I spoke to him and he said that he only has a bill of sale, but wrote a contract regarding the motorcycle purchase on a piece of paper. I realize that this bike didn't have a license plate, and when I look back on his online post about the bike, the license plate seems fake. I checked the VIN on the bike and searched it online to see if anything comes up. Nothing shows up. It was invalid, not to mention also that it was a 9 digit VIN. Also, the VIN on the bike looks like it has been scratched off and somewhat changed. I don't know what to tell the DMV and how to solve this problem.

Check with a Yamaha dealer and find out if there is any place else on the bike that has the VIN other than the obvious.

Odds are it is a stolen bike.

Some states allow the posting of a surety bond to get a title (if by chance it turns out not to be stolen).

Can't help you there, though, since you ignored the question about your state that appeared right in front of your face before you posted.
